Frozen is a Disney movie that made its way into not only children’s homes but homes of some adults. It is a provoking Disney movie about the love two sisters can have for each other; it isn't just another prince and princess movie. The first time I watched this movie was with my two little sisters, they sing and dance along the whole entire movie. I, of course, had to sing and dance along as well so I didn't realize something monumental in it; it showed one of Disney’s first gay couples. A lot of people didn't realize this actually. Viewers see this couple during the scene when they are at Wandering Oakens Trading Post and Sauna. Oaken looks over to the sauna and says “Hoo hoo! Hi family!” This obviously doesn't prove that it is his own family, considering it could mean “Hi, random visiting family” but why call attention to it?
It seems like filmmakers throw this little snippet in to observant viewers and to create discussion. This will be coming up more and more in the future though and Frozen has started it. The perspective of filmmakers is that there is a definite problem with children’s entertainment and how this is effecting their views of a traditional family. Like Obama said, the assumption that every protagonist in cartoon movies and television shows are heterosexual and every prince gets his princess and vice versa is not acceptable anymore in our society. Obviously, we won’t be having The Princess finds her Princess movies for a while, but we still are in the early stages of changing this view we have on what a family is. That’s what Oaken in Frozen has done in Frozen.
When I realized all of this, I pointed it out to my six year old sister and she had some questions for me. “Is it okay for a man to be with a man?” was probably the one that stood out to me the most. I explained to her that Oaken loved that man and his family and that is all that mattered. I also explained how the way we have a Mom and a Dad is the same thing as those kids having two Dads. This conversation was obviously a little pushed because of my English assignment, but I am almost certain my little sister is not the only one to see this couple during the movie. This is just the start of children seeing this in Disney films and this changing our next generation’s views on what a family is and can look like.
